Over the past week, Grace and I have been working hard to get our project going. We met with our professor, Jessica Kleiss, who helped us solidify our ideas and continue project development. Our number one priority this week was to revisit our "nagging question", following the feedback we received on our presentation a few weeks back. Originally, our nagging questions was "Do consumers' environmental concerns affect the food system." While this question made sense to us, we can see how this question can be confusing to others. Jessica pointed out that it doesn't make much sense for something like "concern" to affect something concrete like "the food system". With this in mind, we have been working to develop a question that gets to the core of our concerns. We began this process by reevaluating our "what" and "why". We revisited our scholarship, which can be found in our Zotero library and my annotated bibliography. Next, we tried to rehash our own thinking on this issue to determine our main focus for this project. Building off of our original question, we wanted to solidify our ideas on what is affecting what, which I have demonstrated in the graphic below. We then came up with a few different questions that our of interest for our project:
Another concern we have had is the feasibility of our project plan, or the "how". Jessica gave us a few helpful suggestions for identifying potential contacts. One suggestion she gave us is to look for Public Relations (PR) representatives for the companies we are reaching out to. Generally, PR representatives are most likely to get back to you, as they are in charge of public relations. If all goes well, they can help get us in contact with people who would be interested in participating. She also suggested that we look for conferences and other events in the community to identify stakeholders. One event we found is the Northwest Food Show, held in Portland from April 14th-April 15th. Unfortunately, this event is a little bit late for our Festival of Scholars deadline, but could be helpful for our project in the long run.
Some questions we developed include:
Our goal for this week is to identify several contacts and reach out to them through email. This would put us on track to start meeting with people the week of April 1st, so that we can meet the poster draft deadline of April 9th. We have already reached out to Amy, the owner of aMylk, and are waiting for a response.
